The Adventures of Swim Tribe – Sentosa June 2022

This weekend we took our beginner swim tribe through the ropes at Sentosa Island. These incredible swimmers completed a 4K swim from Tanjong Beach to Pulau Palawan—an amazing achievement for newbie open water enthusiasts!

With 3 expert coaches and 2 kayakers provisioned with snacks, fruit and drinks, we were well-equipped to brave the choppy waters. Swimmers were divided into two groups, with coaches supporting them based on their level of experience and fitness, and to ensure everyone’s safety. Each group got helpful and practical guidance on water safety, how to sight and swim straight, and more.

We also shared our best tips for adapting your stroke to choppy and uneven water conditions, including how to:

  1. Reduce body rotation to maintain stability
  2. Finish strokes slightly away from the body to make it easier to recover
  3. Keep the lead arm closer to the water surface to make it easier to breathe
  4. Insert the recovery arm more deeply before rotating to improve stroke length and distance per stroke

Using these techniques, we were able to make good time, despite having to swim against the current on the way over. We took a short break to nourish ourselves with snacks and drinks helpfully carried by our support kayakers, before getting ready to head back. Fortunately the current was with us this time, and we made it back even before we expected to. All in all it was a morning of exciting achievements in supportive company.

Congratulations to our Swim Tribers for being willing to learn and adventure with us—we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
