Breaststroke Swimming Lessons

Breaststroke Mastery Series – 2 Level Program for Intermediate & Advanced Swimmers

Breaststroke is often the stroke that swimmers learn first, and most easily. But while most swimmers can manage a decent breaststroke, it is rare to find someone who swims breaststroke efficiently, travelling a good distance with each stroke.

Most breaststroke swimmers have been taught to use their arms and legs to propel them through the water, but a truly masterful breaststroke actually uses whole-body movements for propulsion. Another secret to an efficient breaststroke swim is the timing of the strokes—swimming with the wrong timing increases effort and slows you down so you can’t swim as fast or as far.

Our breaststroke mastery program is for people who can swim breaststroke already, but want to take their stroke to the next level. You will learn how to coordinate your whole body in the water to achieve a wave-like undulating breaststroke. This is the kind of stroke you may have admired while watching competitive swimmers. Master Coach Shinji Takeuchi demonstrates it in the video below. Take a look:

Intro/Taster Session

This is a 90-minute taster session that will introduce you to advanced breaststroke technique.

If you are keen to become faster and more efficient in your breaststroke, and transform your breaststroke from a struggle into a smooth, undulating, wave-like movement, join us for a taster session where you can experience the magic for yourself.

WHY JOIN

Workout holistically with different strokes

Swimming is unique in that there are so many movements that can be learned and practiced in the water—and it is meant to be learned in an all-round manner, so that you can work your body and brain holistically and synergistically. Each of the 4 main strokes brings something different to the experience of being in the water, and they also work on different body parts, muscles and different movement skills. When you can swim more than one stroke, you can rotate your training through the different strokes to achieve a balanced workout.

Improve your other strokes naturally

Improving your breaststroke will inevitably lead to improvements in your other strokes too. For example, swimming breaststroke overlaps with your ability to swim butterfly, as the two strokes are connected and share foundational elements like the Y and I body positions, and the undulating movements.

Train different muscle groups and movement skills

Breaststroke and butterfly are short-axis strokes, where the body rotates around the horizontal axis of the hips. On the other hand, freestyle and backstroke are long-axis strokes, where the body rotates around the central axis of the spine. Learning both long-axis and short-axis strokes enhances your coordination, works out different muscle groups and teaches your body better balance in the water. For example, swimming breaststroke will work on your lower body through the leg kick, while the other three strokes are more focused on the core and upper body.
